Michael Bolton speaks about his Andy Samberg/TLI song "Jack Sparrow"

Michael Bolton, featured on “Jack Sparrow”

How did you first get into the Lonely Island?
I was in the studio working on my last CD, and there were computer screens everywhere, and three or four guys were glued to a screen—and they were definitely not working on the music. They said, “You gotta see this!” And it was the Lonely Island boys, in “* in a Box.” In short order we found Natalie Portman, which is another sick and shocking Lonely Island–guys brand of comedy. Very, very funny stuff.

Was there a particular video that made you laugh on SNL?
I don’t recall seeing Natalie on SNL—maybe there was a lot of bleeping. Of course, “Ji$$ in My Pants.” Sorry if the spelling’s wrong. I’ve never written ji$$ before this!

Were you at all surprised when they reached out to you?
Yes, pleasantly surprised. I thought the guys were hilarious and couldn’t believe what they pulled off and how well it was shot and executed.

What was your reaction when you first heard the demo for “Jack Sparrow”?
I thought the visual would be insane but the original lyric was nasty! It was funny for sure, shocking to put it mildly, but too far for me.

Had you done much comedy before?
Just walk-on parts as myself in some Dangerfield films. And finding the “funny” is the first rule in my life.

How was the recording process?
The process was easy except for my schedule, as I was touring steadily. We found a studio in Atlanta to go into and do my vocals. They Skyped me and produced as I sang. It was actually fun doing layers of harmonies to their tracks, but we worked until, I think, 2am, all with a show coming up that night. I appreciated them wanting it all to be done right and hanging in there online until we all thought, “We’ve got it.” That’s when I thought, Ruh-roh, there’s some interesting lyrics going on here.

Did you have any reservations about any of the lyrics? Either the silliness (“The Jester of Tortuga!”) or the saucy quotes (“This whole town’s a pu$$y just waitin’ to get bon*d”)? Or can it be a relief for a “serious” artist to do something playful?
If you had only seen the lyrics Andy was pitching to me earlier you’d know what a relief this version was. Andy has no reservations when it comes to an all-new lower level of illness in the dialog. Some of it was immediately laugh-out-loud freakin’ funny, too, but I couldn’t go there. This one [“This whole town’s a pu$$y.”] is definitely an out-of-character quote for me at the end of the song, but it’s perfectly in character with Pacino’s masterpiece portrayal of Tony in Scarface. Which, of course, is one of my favorite films. I wish they had let me do more speaking in this one. Maybe next time. And yes, it’s a relief to have fun in the skin of different characters and to just have a moment where you can say * it, let’s have some fun with this!

Thanks to Anony for the scoop!

So this is what I took away...
- Michael Bolton first heard of TLI from their 2006 hits (* in a Box was Christmas 06), and he's been a fan, so he was definitely excited to do this with them.
- He required a rewrite process because he didn't want it to be nasty shock comedy.
- They Skyped to produce Bolton in the studio (due to his schedule).

Overall, I have to agree with Bolton. While I loved the shock comedy of Natalie's Rap, their funniest stuff goes a little too far. It's when the song is all about going too far that I lose interest and don't find it funny. For example, they lost me with Sloths, Giraffes, Roy Rules, and now We're Back. I think the shock can be funny when it's in moderation.

So I think Jack Sparrow is an even funnier song because of Bolton's push back.

What do you think?

Enjoy!

Akon speaks about "I Just Had Sex"

Akon is featured on “I Just Had Sex”

Andy says you guys met on the red carpet at the Grammys. Were you a fan of the Lonely Island already?
Yes, my publicist introduced us, and it’s actually funny because she told me they were nominated for a Grammy for “I’m on a Boat,” with T-Pain, who is signed to my label—and that song was a spoof on my music video for “I’m So Paid.” We had a good laugh on the carpet when we met, and I told them I would have given them my boat if they asked.

Are you a comedy fan in general? What do you like about what they do?
I am definitely a fan of comedy and of Lonely Island. They are super talented and have an ear for music. They know how to put a song together that you would want to hear again, even with the ridiculous lyrics. While working with them you see how they complement each other when it comes to writing, producing and getting the visuals together to really make the comedy come through.

When the band said they had a song written for you, were you nervous as to what it might be?
Not at all. I was excited and knew it would be hilarious. You have to have fun in this business, and I knew that these guys take what they do seriously and that the production and comedy would be there.

What was your first reaction on hearing “I Just Had Sex”?
I cracked up. Andy had recorded my lyrics and sent me a rough cut. His impression of me was hilarious. I played around with it a bit to make sure it had that radio appeal, and within a few hours we had our anthem.

How much fun was it to perform the song live at the Comedy Awards? It looked like a blast.
The Comedy Awards were incredible. We actually had back-up dancers and a full choir. For me the hardest part was trying to keep a straight face while Andy and Jorma performed. As you can see, I had a permanent grin the entire performance.

Will you be performing the song live as part of your own set on tour?
We are trying to get the guys out to a show to perform the track with me while I’m on tour with Usher. If our schedules work out, you will definitely get to see us perform it live.

From:
http://newyork.timeout.com/things-to-do/this-week-in-new-york/1301293/lonely-island-guest-stars-speak?page=0,0

Thanks to Anony for the scoop!

This is cool to see how Akon met Andy. It' also cool how he recognizes how well they complement each other.

They obviously gave their best idea to Akon, which was a smart move for the Dudes. So that's why Akon probably had a clearer win and easy experience with the Dudes (where Bolton and the Dudes went through a rewrite process to get it to where they were happy).

Would you see Akon and Usher's concert just to see the Dudes perform live with Akon? They did such a good job with Akon at the Comedy Awards (definitely their best live performance yet).

Enjoy!

Turtleneck & Chain - #1 Album on iTunes!!!

That Was Quick: The Lonely Island's "Turtleneck And Chain" Is The #1 Album On iTunes

Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone -- the Lonely Island -- released their album, "Turtleneck and Chain" this morning. It hit number-one by lunchtime.

So does this mean the comedy record is officially back?

Well, no -- but "Turtleneck and Chain" offers hints as to how it can get there.

Audio recordings of somebody's standup no longer feel like a full experience in the Internet era.

But Samberg and Co. have hit upon a formula that works: jokes-and-beats mashups that don't just contain clever lines -- they also just sound funny, period, when they aren't being catchy.

Their comedy style is personal, but the laughs themselves are broad. No bitter, insidery bits here -- we know 14-year-olds and 40-year-olds who cry laughing at "I Just Had Sex."

Plus, the album is perfectly packaged for electronic download -- it comes with 9 videos. Lonely Island lovers can watch most of those on Hulu, but they're paying for them anyway.

Of course, for all the well-deserved critical praise that's heaped on the group, it's easy to forget they do have one big advantage over you, your buddies and your Flip Cam: they're on "Saturday Night Live," and they get to take advantage of the production values and celebrity cameos that come with it.

Although, who knows -- Michael Bolton looked like he was really enjoying himself on during last week's digital short. Maybe he'd be up for an encore performance on your YouTube channel.

Garfield Sex Music? ('We're Back' promo site)

UPDATE: We added more warnings that this is gross, and we listed out all the reasons why we know this came from The Lonely Island (it's called deductive reasoning; watch Psyche or Sherlock Holmes for more on that).

Originally posted on 4/7/11.

Thanks to Freya for the scoop!

WARNING: FREAKY FAN FICTION. ADULTS ONLY. THIS IS VERY GROSS. CLICK AT YOUR OWN RISK.

http://www.garfieldsexmusic.com/

It contains the animation of Garfield from We're Back. I couldn't bear to show that animated GIF here. It's just too disgusting. However, if you don't want to click the link, but still want to see Garfield being disgusting, you can see it briefly in their music video below (versus seeing it huge and constant, looped on the site).

This site was made by The Lonely Island as a viral attempt, and it links to:

http://www.thelonelyisland.com/video/were-back

Here's how we know it's from TLI:

1) They linked to it from their Twitter. (Thanks to Freya for posting that.)

2) It's their animation. It's in "We're Back."

3) Reminds me of Sloths and Giraffes, which are also by TLI.

4) It links to their "We're Back" video, so it's obviously a viral marketing tactic.

5) This is probably the 8th or so viral marketing attempt they've made (strange games, videos, or websites that promotes a TV show, movie, or video). So it's their M.O. I think their first ones were the Hot Rod game, Rod website, and series of Rod home videos they made for the Web.

Do these viral sites work? The Lonely Island keeps doing little things like this, so either they work or they just do it cuz it works a little and it's fun.

Either way, it's good for us (as long as it's not Garfield being nasty).

Enjoy!

From:
http://thelonelyisland.blogspot.com/2011/04/itunes-countdown-track-names.html
========================

It's no surprise that Mother Lover, Shy Ronnie 2, and Threw it on the Ground are on there. I was expecting to see Shy Ronnie 1 and hoping to see some earlier songs they missed, but it is better to have original songs.

I am surprised that they picked Reba/When Two Worlds Collide to be on the CD, but it makes sense as a bonus track. I am glad they have Reba and Great Day as music videos.

Interestingly, "We'll Kill U" is not on the list of the songs, but it is a video. That likely means that the video is done and coming next, either as a digital short on SNL or to be aired on a show like Jimmy Fallon. For their last album, TLI aired We Like Sportz on YouTube only and not on TV (because it wasn't an Andy song, it didn't make sense to air it on SNL), but they might premiere more music videos on Jimmy Fallon (since it seems to have worked well with "We're Back," despite the fact that the video/song isn't so great).

My first guess is that "We'll Kill U" is the SNL digital short this week (or coming soon).

As Victoria mentioned, they didn't list all the collaborators yet. I still want them to do a music video with Jack Black. Jack promoted Awesometown for them, he was in Andy's Glurk skit during Andy's first season, and he did a song with them on Incredibad, but he has yet to be in one of their music videos.

So what songs do you want to hear/see the most (based only on the title)?

Here's my list:

1. Jack Sparrow
2. No Homo
3. Rocky
4. Trouble on Dookie Island
5. Turtleneck and Chains
6. Attracted to Us
7. Falcor VS Atreyu (not a song, but it might make a good digital short)

Enjoy!

Andy Samberg and TLI's hilarious Jimmy Fallon interview & "We're Back"

So Andy Samberg and the dudes sit down with Jimmy Fallon and talk it out.

Elton John digital short tonight! However, from the way Andy announced it, methinks it is not a musical digital short. But we'll see!

Andy Samberg coins the term "I Biebered" by referring to winking. It's also funny that of the four of them, Jimmy was the one to crack, "Pulling a Bieber is something totally different." Hilarious!

The Lonely Island boys show off their rejected album covers and reveal the final photo: “Turtleneck & Chain,” which Jorma explains was what they were wearing when they met in 7th grade. My favorite album cover was Andy's: 3 Morks. That would have been awesome! Keep it Simple was also pretty funny (we showed that one here already). Which was your favorite?

I suspect they weren't really rejected. They just brainstormed a lot of crazy ideas and turned all the funny ones into album covers.

I'm thinking that they might actually show more digital shorts on Jimmy Fallon. Jimmy has time to kill every night, and they can't always get their digital shorts in on SNL (this week it would be because this one is pure shock value and they have wanted to do one with Elton John instead). So maybe they'll show more shorts on Jimmy Fallon when they don't fit on SNL for whatever reason.

This is good for us fans, because that means more digital shorts from the dudes!

Watch the world premiere of The Lonely Island “We’re Back” music video:

Um, yeah, The Lonely Island has grown up? A total shock song. They announce that Akiva has a baby. Is it true? Probably, because the rumors are going around and they just spoke of it, but I'm not 100% certain.

I'm a little disappointed with this song, because I don't find these shock songs funny (reminds me of Roy Rules, Sloths, Tucker's Song, and Giraffes). What do you think?

And the reality is that half this song is bleeped. You can find the uncensored version on their YouTube channel.

All well, at least their interview was hilarious.

Enjoy!

Thanks to Freya for the scoop!

As Victoria mentioned, the Justin Timberlake collab is likely Mother Lover. The Akon one is I Just Had Sex. The Nicke Minaj one is The Creep, and the Rihanna one is likely the Emmy nominated Shy Ronnie (and maybe the sequel, Shy Ronnie 2: Ronnie and Clyde). I'm also hoping to see On the Ground and Great Day. My favorite ones they missed from Incredibad would be Young Chuck Norris, My Testicles, and Harpoon Man (and Iran So Far, but they tried to release that already).

Enjoy!

Andy Samberg & TLI - New Album: "Turtleneck and Chain"

SNL's Lonely Island Return May 10 with 'Turtleneck and Chain'

Saturday Night Live comedy/parody troupe The Lonely Island -- Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone -- have wrapped up their new album Turtleneck and Chain for a May 10 arrival via Universal Republic. Known for their outrageous comic films and music parodies, a highlight on the long-running SNL series, the trio became an internet video sensation and released their debut album Incredibad in 2009 with videos "Jizz in My Pants", "Dick In A Box", "Lazy Sunday" and "Natalies Rap" (featuring Natalie Portman).

The new project, available as a digital release, a vinyl edition and a CD/DVD combo, will include such classics as "The Roommate" (with Justin Bieber), "Stumblin'", "I Just Had Sex" (featuring Akon and which spawned the album's title) and "The Creep" (with Nicki Manaj and John Waters).

Andy Samberg & TLI - Rejected Album Covers

Here are The Lonely Island rejected album covers for their second album:

Andy's face was pasted on. These are obviously a joke to remind everybody that TLI is working on their album. My guess is that in these few weeks between SNL episodes, Andy and Akiva are helping Jorma work on the album in high gear (and that this is Jorma's full-time job right now).

What do you think? Which one do you like better?

"I Just Had Sex" Lyrics (The Lonely Island)

Here are the lyrics originally written by Adam Rap. Refinement pass by us. Leave a comment if you have any more refinements! Thanks to Anony for submitting the two new corrections we made(see the comments).

- TAE

An SNL Digital Short: I Just Had Sex

.....Andy Samberg
.....Jorma Taccone
.....Akiva Schaffer
.....Akon
.....Blake Lively
.....Jessica alba
.....John McEnroe

[Exterior: Opens to Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akon standing on a platform with New York City in the background]

(singing)

Andy Samberg: Sometimes, something beautiful happens in this world...

Akon: Akon!

Andy Samberg: And you don't know how to express yourself, so...

Akon: And Lonely Island!

Andy Samberg: You just gotta sing.

Akon: I just had sex
and it felt so good.
A woman let me put my pen*s inside of her.
I just had sex
and I'll never go back
to the not-having-sex ways of the past.

Andy Samberg: Have you ever had sex?
I have; it felt great.
It felt so good when I did it with my pen*s.
A girl let me do it.
It literally just happened.

[Shows Blake Lively covering up after sex with Andy Samberg]

Andy Samberg: Having sex can make a nice man of the meanest.

[Cuts to "before" and "after" sex pictures of John McEnroe]

Jorma Taccone: Guess where I just came from.
I had sex.
If I had to describe the feeling,
it was the best!

[Jorma gives a thumbs up as Jessica Alba gives a thumbs down]

Jorma Taccone: When I had the sex,
man my pen*s felt great,
and I called my parents right after I was done.

[Shows Jorma hugging his parents]

[Samberg comes out of a restroom]

Andy Samberg: Oh hey, didn't see you there.
Guess what I just did.
Had sex... undressed,
saw her bo*bies and the rest.

[Samberg does hand motions of squeezing bo*bies while Blake gives him a look of disgust and disbelief]

Jorma Taccone: Was sure... nice of her...
to let you do that thing.

Andy Samberg: Nice of any girl ever.

Jorma Taccone: Now sing.

Akon: I just had sex,
and it felt so good.
A woman let me put my pen*s inside of her.
I wanna tell the world...

Andy Samberg: To be honest,
I'm surprised...
she even wanted me...
to do it.

Jorma Taccone: Doesn't really make sense,
but man, screw it.
I'm not really one to argue with a good thing.

Andy Samberg: She could be my wife.

Jorma Taccone: That good?

Andy Samberg: The best thirty seconds of my life.

Jorma Taccone: I'm so humbled by a girl's ability to let me do her.

Andy Samberg: 'Cause honestly I'd have sex with a pile of manure.

[Shows Andy Samberg in bed with a pile of manure]

Andy Samberg: With that in mind...
a soft, nice smellin' girls better.

Jorma Taccone: Plus she let me wear my chain and my turtleneck sweater.

[Jessica Alba is weirded out by Jorma in his chain and blue turtleneck sweater.]

Akon: So this one's dedicated...
to them girls...
that let us flop around on top of them.
If you're near or far,
whether short or tall,
we wanna thank you all...
for lettin' us f*** you.

Jorma Taccone: She kept looking at her watch.

Akon: Doesn't matter; had sex.

Andy Samberg: But I cried the whole time.

Akon: Doesn't matter; had sex.

Jorma Taccone: I think she might have been a racist.

Akon: Doesn't matter, you had sex.

Andy Samberg: She put a bag on my head.

Akon: Still counts!
I just had sex...

[Shows Andy with two sparkler fireworks, celebrating while Blake has her head in her hand in the background, ashamed by Andy's behavior]

Akon: and my dreams came true.

[Shows Akiva, in tophat, putting gold medals around Jorma's and Andy's necks, and they're standing under a big banner that says "SEX OLYMPICS"]

Akon: If you had sex in the last thirty minutes then you're qualified to sing with me.

People from all over the world: I just had sex...

Andy Samberg: Everybody sing!

Everyone: and it felt so good.

Akon: So good!

Everyone: A woman let me put my pen*s inside of her.

Jorma Taccone: I want to tell the world!

Everyone: I just had sex...
and I'll never go back...
to the not-having-sex ways of the past.

[Fireworks, including fireworks coming out of the crotches of Jorma, Akon, and Andy]

Enjoy!

Andy Samberg and TLI - new album (song guesses)

You may be asking yourself “Hollywood.com, why are you reporting on an announcement of a rap album, let alone a fake rap album?” Well I’ll tell you why, fictional person who talks to computers: banana hemorrhoids. Yes, that answer doesn’t make any sense, but neither does talking to a computer and asking it stupid questions.

No, we’re reporting on it because this album will be the basis of most of the SNL Digital Shorts next year and those are always awesome. For those unaware, Andy Samberg and his friends Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer started the Lonely Island prior to joining SNL (Taccone and Schaffer as writers), where they created short digital videos that were precursors to the "SNL Digital Short" of today. Both Schaffer and Taccone have branched out into directing as well. Schaffer handled the Lonely Island’s first feature Hot Rod while Taccone directed the masterpiece MacGruber. So yes, we’re excited.

And we’re also reporting on it because their last album, Incredibad, is actually a good album and worth listening to as it’s actual music and not a collection of jokes. These guys actually know how to rap and have good taste. Along with their great sense of fun and star studded guest MCs and singers, their next album should be straight up ballin’. Which I’m pretty sure is a term popularly used for expressing one’s appreciation in someone else’s work of art.

Judging how they recently released a version of their Awesometown theme song to their TLI YT channel, I think they might actually call the next album "Awesometown," which of course would make that song a give-in to appear on their second album.

In Incredibad, they only included 5 older songs, and none of them were from pre-SNL, so they might only include a few of these songs, and not #14-19, since those are all pre-SNL.

Enjoy!

Andy Samberg and The Lonely Island - new album!!!

NEW ALBUM COMING IN 2011!!!!

Thanks to Janey for the scoop!

Regarding the rumors that Andy won't be in it (mostly because he isn't in this video):

Not likely. He's probably just too busy to film this bit cuz he's on SNL now. I know he isn't split with TLI because the dudes helped him write and make his Emma Stone promos and the Grape Jelly digital short. They aren't split.

Enjoy!
