Black History Month 2011 - The Association of Students of African Heritage (ASAH) Netherlands

The Association of Students of African Heritage (ASAH) in The Netherlands cordially invites you to the fourth edition of Black History Month on 18th and 25th February 2011.

About ASAH
ASAH was founded by and for students who can directly and indirectly distract their roots from Africa and for those who have affinity with the African continent. ASAH activities are geared on providing members with opportunities to further develop themselves on a personal, professional, social and cultural level during the course of their studies. The activities organized by ASAH include Black History Month, Movie nights, Africa Rising, Social Lounges, Excursions and ASAH’s first trip abroad to London in 2010. The Student Association is based at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam.

Black History Month 2011

Theme: “The Economics of Culture – the way we dress, eat and express ourselves from an economic perspective”

Many African and Afro-Caribbean countries are endowed with resources that could stimulate economic stability and independence. However, many of those are plight by economic inefficiencies coupled with a constant dependence on global resources. For example, “one may see a black woman elegantly clothed with traditional attire. But her cloth may be from Vlisco (the Dutch manufacturer of African prints), shoes/slippers from Italy and earrings/jewelleries from Thailand. Instead of local manufactures many prefer Hollywood movies over Nollywood/Ghallywood/Black films or even opt for Indian Basmati or American Uncle Sam rice instead of locally cultivated rice etc”.

Considering the trends of commerce, “to what extent are we (Blacks) economically independent when we portray the African/(Afro-) culture”?

Programme Outline

Day 1: Friday February 18th – Culture and Entrepreneurship

The first day of BHM 2011 focuses on culture and the similarities between Blacks from the Diaspora and the African continent. It also provides an opportunity to explore the economic aspect of culture. Furthermore, day 1 serves as a window to showcase and promote Afro-businesses, as well as a means to network. The day is set up as follows:
• Through the conceptualization of culture and what constitutes the African/(Afro-) culture, a “Black Cultural Expert” will enlighten us with reference to the theme. The expert will talk about various developments in the Black culture over the years.
• Fashion show: Traditional clothing from the African continent and the Diaspora will be displayed. Two different kinds of clothing from the following areas is to be modelled:
o West Africa
o East Africa
o Southern Africa
o Former Netherlands Antilles
o Suriname
During the fashion show, information will be provided about the attires, their origins, designer etc.
• Entrepreneurs: After the fashion show, Mrs. L. Echtelt of Mariposa Import, will share her views on “Black consumerism and entrepreneurship”.
• Cultural treats/snacks: There will be cultural snacks to enjoy. Information will be provided about the ingredients used, its origin, the caterers and/or where to buy them.
• There will also be a spoken word performance by T. Martinus. The day ends with a Musical performance!

Day 2: Friday February 25th – Presentation and workshop entrepreneurship

The second day of BHM 2011 consists of a workshop and an interactive presentation at the Erasmus University.

• Workshop: To encourage the youth and BHM participants of African heritage to take initiative to become entrepreneurs, Ms. W. Gillis-Burleson – managing director of Legato B.V. and the best Black Business Woman 1997 – will give a workshop on empowerment and entrepreneurship. This workshop aims to equip participants with some fundamental knowledge, tools and skills essential for business for starters.
• Presentation: Mr. T. Kofi – Director of the Foundation Africa Next Door – will talk about the consumption trends of Black people and its consequences. Mr. Kofi will show the correlation between the African continent and Black communities worldwide. Participants or the audience will have an opportunity to ask questions or share their opinion. Amongst others, there will be a debate/discussion on “Does our culture inhibit us to enterprise?” during the discussion round.

Sunday's episode of 'Kourtney & Kim Take New York' showed constant cover girl Kim Kardashian upset over her nude W magazine spread from October 2010.

Kim was beside herself after seeing the photos, insisting she'd been promised something more artsy, less "full f***ing porn."

"Oh my God, I'm more naked than I was in Playboy," cried Kim, who has expressed regret over her Playboy experience. "I'm so mad right now! She promised I would be covered with artwork. You can see nipple. The whole concept was sold to me that nothing would be seen." See the clip after the jump.

Kim felt "taken advantage of" and learned her lesson, vowing: "I'm never taking my clothes off again, even if it's for Vogue."

The Hollywood Gossip weighed in this morning, writing, "While I get that Kim was embarrassed that the 'art' promised to cover her naked body wasn't delivered, I have to wonder if she and the editors were on the same page. Wouldn't you want it made crystal clear (and in writing) that you are only going nude for this high-fashion magazine if objects were covering your girly bits?"

Despite the emotional toll the photos took on Kim, she came around by the magazine's release, saying, "I'm glad I did them."

Chicago Weather, There are several reports for Chicago’s weather, a series of storms can hit and also expect that windstorm can affects badly. The weather forecast for Chicago at 10 days seems very disturbing. However, a forecast of bad weather in Chicago 10 days is quite normal, as cold conditions expected this time of year. But the next few days could be quite historic, as the Windy City is fast becoming the snowy town. Blizzards were common in the Northeast and Midwest regions of the winter, but a storm front building could be even greater in some regions. This makes the weather in Chicago 10 days forecast even more important given that the city could be among the hardest hit in this blizzard.

A punch one or two of snow and wind are expected to hit the north northwestern Illinois and Indiana over the next three days.

Passage of snow will become snow showers and possibly a steady light snow Monday night and continue during the night.

Accumulations of 1-3 inches are possible by Tuesday morning.

The snow should taper off around noon Tuesday before the approach of a much more efficient system of southwest.

Blizzard is a watch in effect Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday as a system of low-pressure moves to strengthen the Ohio Valley.

Tuesday afternoon snow late stable and stronger winds will push into the region, beginning south of I-80 north and dissemination during the evening.

Rate of snow Tuesday night could approach 2-3 cm per hour and when combined with sustained winds at 30-40 mph, visibility will drop significantly with near whiteout conditions possible.

Total of 12-20 inches of snow are possible between Monday night and Wednesday afternoon with locally higher amounts.

Blowing snow and blowing snow will make travel dangerous and potentially life threatening, Tuesday night.

“I would love to be in a Bond film — a Bond Girl!” Kardashian gushed. “That would be the ultimate.”
So is she ready to leave her reality stardom behind?
“I love acting,” she said. “It’s challenging for me, and I love it.”
Kardashian is reportedly eyeing several new roles, so fans might get a chance to see the star out of her comfort area.
“There are a few offers on the table, but I definitely want to make the right decision for the right part,” she dished about her future thespian endeavors.
For the sake of Bond fans everywhere, lets hope this isn’t true.

Kim Kardashian In Tears Over W Magazine “Porn” Pics

Kim Kardashian broke down in tears after seeing naked pictures of herself, covered only in silver body paint for W magazine.
On the reality show “Kourtney and Kim Take New York”, Kim Kardashian, 30, was humiliated when she saw the pictures from her photo shoot with W magazine.
Kim claims she thought she would be covered in silver paint and artwork, which would later be added.
She said, “This artist will put images of architecture and buildings and stuff on top of me so you will see my body shape and the outline but not actually my boobs or anything.”
But when Kim saw the photos in W magazine, she told Kourtney she was more naked in these pictures than when she posed for Playboy..
Kim said, “I’m more naked here than I was in my Playboy. This is just absurd. This is serious porn.”
But W magazine called and told her the cover was their best ever, she quickly became accepting of the nude pictures. Kim says, “I’m glad I did it.”

Katrina Kaif 'Disturbed' By Tax Raid

Katrina Kaif has slammed reports she is under investigation for tax evasion, insisting she is "disturbed" by the accusations.

The Indian star hit the headlines earlier this week (begs24Jan11) after representatives for the country's tax authorities confirmed officials had raided the offices and homes of Kaif and her peer Priyanka Chopra, in addition to a number of other top Bollywood names.

Tax department director-general D.P. Gaur confirmed on Monday (24Jan11) that properties belonging to the actresses were "being searched and whatever materials are procured will be recorded for further action", but refused to go into further detail.

However, a "disturbed" Kaif has hit out at the claims and she is adamant all her tax payments are up-to-date.

A statement issued by her accountants adds: "Katrina is fully co-operating with the (tax) department, whom she holds in high regard."

Kaif is said to earn $670,000 (£446,670) per film.
